  • At Kairos Integrative Health, we are dedicated to supporting your goals through a comprehensive and integrative approach. Our practice offers a range of services designed to meet your individual needs, ensuring that you receive care that helps you meet your goals.

What is Integrative Psychiatry?

Integrative psychiatry is an approach to mental health care that combines traditional psychiatric practices with alternative, complementary, and holistic therapies to treat the whole person, body, mind, and spirit. It aims to address not only the symptoms of mental health conditions but also the root causes, considering the interplay between psychological, biological, emotional, and environmental factors.

Key Features of Integrative Psychiatry:

  1. 1. Comprehensive Approach:
  • Integrative psychiatry looks at all aspects of a person’s well-being, recognizing that mental health disorders can be influenced by physical health, lifestyle, trauma, social context, and emotional balance.
  1. 2. Combination of Conventional and Alternative Treatments:
  • While traditional psychiatric methods like psychotherapy and medication are often used, integrative psychiatry also incorporates other treatments such as:
  • Nutritional and dietary interventions
  • Mind-body techniques
  • Herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Exercise and physical activity
  1. 3. Focus on Personalized Care:
  • Integrative psychiatry takes a highly personalized approach to treatment, tailoring interventions to meet the unique needs of the individual. It seeks to create a holistic treatment plan based on the person’s specific symptoms, lifestyle, genetic predispositions, and personal preferences.
  1. 4. Prevention and Wellness:
  • This approach emphasizes not only treating mental health issues but also promoting long-term wellness and preventing mental health problems from arising in the first place. This could involve lifestyle adjustments, stress management techniques, and cultivating resilience.

Therapy

Therapy Services

At Kairos Integrative Health, we utilize psychotherapies when appropriate. In many cases, best outcomes result from a combination of psychotherapy with medication management. Psychotherapies utilized by our providers can include but are not limited to:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Supportive Psychotherapy
  • Motivational Interviewing

In the setting where you would benefit from more consistent psychotherapy or a psychotherapeutic modality that is not available from our provider(s), we may refer you to a colleague to obtain appropriate care.

Addiction

  • Addiction is a complex, chronic condition that affects both the mind and body, leading to destructive behaviors and strained relationships. Whether it involves substances like alcohol, prescription medications, or illicit drugs, addiction can feel overwhelming, but recovery is possible. At KIH, we are committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each individual's needs. We work together to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses the underlying causes of addiction and promotes long-term recovery.
  • Please note we do not currently offer treatment with Suboxone or other medications containing buprenorphine as it is a controlled substance.

Genetic Testing

  • In psychiatry, we utilize genetic testing to analyze specific genes related to mental health medications. This tool can be helpful in determining treatment options for individuals. By assessing how a person's genetic makeup affects their response to various psychiatric medications, genetic testing can help clinicians select medications that are more likely to be effective and have fewer side effects.
  • This personalized approach aims to enhance treatment outcomes and reduce the trial-and-error process often associated with psychiatric care. Ultimately, genetic testing used at Kairos Integrative Health is a tool to empower patients and providers to make informed decisions about medication management, leading to more tailored and effective mental health treatment.

CNS-VS Testing

  • Central Nervous System (CNS) Vital Signs testing is a comprehensive assessment that evaluates cognitive functioning, neurological health, and overall brain performance. This testing measures various domains, including attention, memory, language, and processing speed, providing a detailed overview of cognitive abilities.
  • By tracking changes in CNS function over time, healthcare providers can develop tailored treatment plans and monitor progress effectively.

Community Partnerships

  • After working in North Carolina with Duke and Yale trained Psychiatrists/Addictionologists, Mark returned to Birmingham to open his own practice, Kairos Integrative Health. Two key areas of focus for the practice are to return knowledge and experience he acquired as well as help build resilience in others to reach the ultimate goal of improving our communities' quality of life now and in the future.

Current Partnership

  • A core mission of KIH is to share knowledge with others, which is being achieved in our community through two main initiatives:
  •
  • 1. The Resilience RoundTable – Virtual RoundTable adults can join (anonymously if they choose) to gain information on a variety of mental health topics.
  • 2. Community Outreach – KIH is currently working on partnerships with local professional organizations and high schools to equip those in our community with education to help develop resilience.
